What CIOs don't Get About Data and Digital Transformation
Transcript
over the past couple of months I've had a wide range of conversations from chief data officer to executives within large enterprise IT companies and analyst firms one of the insights that I realized over the course of these past couple of months is that while data is very important CIOs have invested in data analytics capabilities they're missing a key component of investment or at least change within their organization most of the time when I go into an organization and I present the idea of a data infrastructure
that expands public cloud private cloud software as a service solution CEOs love the concept however when I go into their lieutenants I find that there is a major disconnect the storage administrator or the director of IT storage is focused on the MBOs that the CIO and their VP have rolled down to them which is almost around cost savings and uptime of the storage infrastructure while the CTO is focused on data analytics and speed to answers how can it get the business the answers they require in
order to make business decisions let's talk about successful organizations IDC shared an interesting stat with me doing HPE discover in which they said that digitally transformed organizations spent 25 times more on software-defined storage let's just call that modern storage infrastructure then their counterparts that's a staggering amount that's the staggering difference a major investment in enterprise storage technology capability how are they reaping the benefits of that well if you talk to these enterprise storage vendors these that's providing software-defined storage the most cutting-edge customers are taken advantage
of made metadata and the AP is associated with this these storage solutions this has got something that happens an IT infrastructure by itself not based on the MBOs that we hand down to our IT infrastructure teams this is activity that's happening at the cdos so while there's traditional relationships with database providers analytics firms enterprise software vendors such as s AP etcetera that cdo's leverage to get the get to answers from the software level there are more or less ignoring the capabilities of these new software-defined storage
solutions why is this the first time you've heard of this it's all about relationships currently enterprise orchard vendors the net outs of the world who have a pretty good vision around data fabric speak to IT infrastructure while s AP and Qualtrics and all of these analytic firms are talking to the cdos their ships passing in the night this is something that I've reformed what the conversations that I've had CDOs very much interested in how they get their data scientists out of the business of wrangling data
something that the storage administrators can do for them versus the storage administrators that I talk to and I present these ideas to them they just say you know what Keith great idea great capability but I'm measured on how much money can I save on our next storage array or storage investment complete mismatch of business objectives so you want to find out more about this you can one contact me I'm Keith at the CTO advisor comm or you can reach out via twitter at CTO advisor on
