[Music] hey how's Keith Towser from the CTO Pfizer that comment we're still and beautiful Las Vegas is only middle and I think it's 115 now I can't think is that hot honestly it's only about 104 but it's dry heat so there's that I'm with mill and decide yeah you're already a CTO advisor better you've been on the CTO advisor before we talked about top services over on the campuses we're at VMworld 2018 and I'm glad that you're beat you has been the quietness of the conference before I mean so far so I joke we both work for VMware now we're on the same side of the table so we're gonna try I'm gonna try and keep my honesty analyst head on and not get too excited about some of the announcements I'm gonna open up with a challenging question this is the CTO visor we'd like to challenge each other still I've been in the field I've talked to customers and one question that I get consistently is we're cloud first and since we're cloud first why should we even have a conversation with VMware I think that's a fair question coming from a customer who may not know all the facets of what we've been doing and as you correctly pointed out you know we have had a quite VMworld you know st.
Joe but you know now if you look at you know first let's catify what cloud first means we mean cloud first and then really a lot in native cloud in its truest form write a native AWS Asher and GCP and in the future are the ones so the the that is kind of interesting thing that happened at this vm world which is the acquisition of cloud right and that changes the dynamics of the conversation we can have with these customers now so cloud health is a platform that was built for born in the operators so not necessarily there's no no hair it's VMware foundation of cloud hell's this is video us Google compute bazoer people are building clouds it's cloud native portable allocations afternoon and that's where they were born they've been doing this now for a while they are the largest data leader in public cloud management with under you know five billion dollars in cloud spend that is managed by them they have 3700 customers you see some names like yeah Pinterest we're using it pop on in the cloud cloud first so I got a push back just you know I'm chief of still gotta push back there's been this is concept you go to Cal whether you're small shop large stop there is no management of the cloud I can go to the need of it portal and AWS has hundreds of services mm-hmm over thousand service listen why do I need a cloud management company to help me manage something that then on the surface give me everything that I need great question right so if you think about if I would like a business operator I start using the public cloud very quickly you start dealing with tens of thousands of objects right you're using multiple cloud services VMs containers using message queues that complexity starts to grow right now you do this across five projects ten projects a hundred products and then across there are a thousand users and so you can see the complexity just start scaling and what you start seeing which is really interesting is around things like resource efficiency let me kind of give you an example if you leave it to a line of business they will continue to deploy and spend and grow their business they're not worried about shutting down stuff or optimizing it because they're focused on speed it's like it's like a race car driver all I care about is being number one being ahead of right the cloud operations platform that VMware is talking about is your crew chief and Petru we are essentially coming and saying hey you may have not configured your RDS right or you're a sure a sequel database configuration could be optimized better for cost for efficiency and so that's kind of crew chief coming and giving recommendations on making the race car driver better and then a pit crew by literally saving costs right I can take a customer who's using on-demand instances and move them to reserve instances and save them millions of dollars all right so that's where this kind of combination of your the line of business innovating using native services and this aspect of cloud management starts coming into play thousands of objects across multiple projects and users and they multiply that by the number of clouds this becomes an interesting data problem and that's really what cloud noticed are take the leg data they instrument it to then deliver outcomes whether it's around cost visibility resource management compliance and that's really why they've been successful in the market so just to reinforce that idea some of the conversations I've had out in the treaty is that people are you know they're fascinated about this concept of service and the building build applications using either event-driven or no cold type of applications and one of the comments interesting convey and I saw from Chelsie Hightower in Google he said you know I've been messing around with service apps and the bigger the application I feel the more it feels like application like I have to still manage this thing I may not have to manage the online infrastructure but the application itself has all these complexities and it sounds like cloud health helps to manage those complexities that natively come with anything you know simplicity breaks when it scales like the you want to break the simplicity just skill and you'll find out where your product or service is complex that they plow health helps with that so I want to talk about two more topics we're gonna try and get these in the first it is vke vertical versus PKS I did it because I thought I could we we talked about it with Paula Zahn and yourself the last time I was going to be aware campus kubernetes distribution on top of these beer so what I get vke another did to Denny's distribution like what's the what's the point yeah so begins is for some month wants to build an operating and so folks who want to build and operate the kubernetes stack on top of their infrastructure and deliver it themselves right and so that you can do on vSphere it is now book it works on you know GCB right with AWS and Azure coming soft shortage so you are building and operating it yourself the premise of BKE was different you know if you were to ask me I would say why should you care about kubernetes clusters and worker nodes and all the computer all of the intricacies of that what if I just told you ten minutes sub ten minutes I can give a kubernetes cluster to the end user and they're up and running and it scales up it scales down you can access cloud services natively it just works right so what is a service the other one is your building and operating there both kubernetes but that's the main difference and vke books in the native public lab it's almost like you don't need to worry about the details of urban Ares you know me manage it for you upgrades all of that taking their skills up scales now you put your policy around access management control give it to your developers and you're off to the races alright so that's all gone and I can do that without even I'm an LA from VMware for vSphere none of that had anything to do with these dragons or something we can independently Clow help I can meet our future 18 gauge be aware and help with the management of my existing cloud native applications but very few organizations can never say ok we're going to repack form every application get out of the data center we have that we're coming to this realization whether it's bit more cloud eat up less or the reason a mountain RDS on vSphere that I'm going to have this these two things that live together they have to be integrated we let's go around go back to the video in which we talked about NSX T and that's great for doing the glue and the underlying connectivity but something that did not see coming and I have to give him a head tip to you guys because I'm giving you guys a heart now us a hard time about not what I ran could call moving into speed of the CIO this you know we have to push customers we have to get coverage to the point where they're really thinking about hybrid cloud RDS on top of vSphere is a huge announcement the ability for a developer to go to a AWS console provision RDS based database on-premises so Amazon manages the database and VMware provides the underlay warm print mm-hmm certainly say that's the use case yeah so the first one I think the Y is pretty straightforward I think a lot of people have pushes around I know we won't have all the answers but how like we're going to start with it it's so you know it's like I said things are starting to come together right and and it was care when you look at the hybrid plus native equal to multi I think we are providing the simplest way I would say is land your application where you want to land it we will deliver our value to you right whether it's my native cloud but then it's on a hybrid cloud or bringing cloud services on Prime and the perfect example so the question was you know how you know how does how will this all work decontrolled me you are RDS will be the same control plane which is sitting in aid of the resturant and the destination that will show up will be your on-prem data cell at which point you will point to their own emptiness and it's a cluster of these four cluster and you will have a software module that will be have pieces of VMware software as well as a SS so the that software module is part of the control plane other modules talking to the AWS that they don't you say hey I'm basically a video gift region for correct you can deploy RDS database here and the software that we are providing enables you to do very interesting things from snapshot management to you know offline operations just you know taking making to your point the vSphere until it operate alongside the RDS control and data plane that goes along so this would be the CT otherwise if I didn't go out of bounds at least ask the question why watch one I can think of a hundred different services then potentially I could do that with it can be easy to number why RDS what why the database layer why do I start at the database because this database is not easy you I'm thinking about just how about monitor maintain performance all that that's right probably one of the hardest layers to start it you just said it it is the hardest problem and eight up to us but it's RDS offering has solid it very well in the cloud and so why not take on the hardest problem which gives the most benefit to our customers up front and so that's the reason we're doing it because we believe that that problem needed a solution and with AWS coming together with us we will be able to bring that solution to market so take the hardest problem installed in the cloud why not solve it for operands Wow so during peak what what happens are early reactions by customers we're at vmworld 2018 I know customers saw maybe scratching there if others are chomping at the bit maybe somewhere in different but what what has been the overall reaction yeah it's been interesting this vehicle you know I've been like give you the excitement with always a believer except I've got Rd as the front side I've got this thing called a cloud out you know be really starting to make a more pre pre-announce we've been having private conversations with customers and since announced I can tell you especially because I have a history at VMware with NSX you know it doesn't also customers have already reached out we've had multiple meetings here you know we're getting into the nitty-gritty of you know what versions of my sequel and it's just been super interesting there is a real problem and I think you know this is going to be a fun ride yeah so I look for heavy on a party with the podcast or CTO dose again to talk through like performance monitoring what type of value-added services because if we look at the ecosystem of the line go to the AWS marketplace I have all these cool services I can put on top of RDS how do those come into play security you know that how does NSX and as X team play into this a lot of the things that I challenge you guys are I'm sure the folks are back in the lab working through some of this I'm looking forward to having you on the CTO advisor to talk to those things again for people who want to viewer its web 5 as a big website on them people who want to zero in and talk about cloud learn more about cloud services system that's
