It's not just a VM solution anymore. >> Oh, Keith, that is exactly the perception I spend a lot of time debunking. I'll be honest with you. And especially if you look at the last two years, right? The last time we had an in-person, major VMware event of a name that I won't say, Veeam had zero cloud-native backup products.

Now, at this day, at this point in time today, we have an AWS that's on a version five and Azure that's on a version four and Google that's on a version three, and we've acquired cloud native apps backup with Kubernetes, with Caston. So a lot has changed in addition to physical workloads, NAS backup has come into the mix, enterprise applications, the platform's ready for anybody today. >> So let's talk about some of the use cases and capabilities that's been developed over the past few years.

One of the things that I reached out to you, actually a couple years ago, I said, you know what? I was coming out of a tech field day event and I found out about the AWS product. And not only that you could back up like an EC2 instance, but you could take that EC2 instance and repatriate it back to a private data center. I had that use case. I supported an application for a friend. He deployed it on EC2. It really didn't need the elasticity of the perfect cloud.

People hear this all the time. It was basically a VM that ran in the public cloud. I had a data center, it was best to put it on there. So I called you guys up and I said, Rick, I need to move this workload from the public cloud to my private data center. Talk to me about that use case. Why does it exist? >> Well, there's a lot of times that lift and shift isn't what it's all cracked up to be.

Okay? And people change their mind on what is the right platform for a workload. And so that's the one beautiful thing about a Veeam image-based backup. We make portability built into it right from the start. So today, I can take any hypervisor and restore it to the cloud. I can take any, and that's AWS, Azure and Google. I can take an image-based backup of compute for many of those clouds and restore it to VMware and Hyper-V, or should say, or Hyper-V.

And then I believe now also to the Nutanix AHV hypervisor, and then likewise physical servers can go into that journey as well. And sometimes, Keith, it, it's not necessarily because you want to, because maybe you have to. Try getting some replacement parts nowadays. You know, if you have a physical server or even your cluster has a major issue, a part failure, that's a real challenge. And we see people going to service providers, going to the public cloud, not because they want to but sometimes because they have to, and we partner with everybody and that's built into our DNA at Veeam.

But it takes a little bit of QA to get that right. 'Cause we do the little things like UEFI to BIOS conversion that's necessary for going to AWS. And then you go back to BIOS to go to Azure. And yeah, I can take an EC2 instance and restore it into Azure. I can do the same thing with Kubernetes apps, which is crazy talk too. So the need is people come to us for backup and recovery but that data portability is a really nice bonus, especially if you need it.

>> So let's talk about the additional pieces of the, as data has grown, the challenges have grown. Data isn't no longer just MI, VMware, V-Spirit environment on premises. I have all of these solutions in the public cloud, et cetera, but one of the problems that our team came to you with was, again, I started to worry about malware. It started to keep me up at night worrying about what would happen if somebody break my V-Spirit environment. We were using Veean to back up to disc at on site.

Worked fine. Kind of said it, forget it and didn't worry about it, until I worry, well, it was just a set of flat files on my H drive on my server. What if that was encrypted? >> Yeah, we went through that drill and it was actually surprisingly easy to add that extra layer of resiliency. And that's what I just spoke about here today at VMware Explore, that it is so easy to add what I call ultra resiliency to the backup copies.

Now, Veeam is so flexible. In some regards, Keith, it's almost a challenge 'cause it's like, well, what do you have? Or what do you want? But what's your recommendation? But if I just walk into somebody, what you have is basically what I'd recommend. Going to a general purpose disc system for the first copy. You get the best performance, you get the best, now when I say performance, I'm referring to handling increments and then performance as well of restores. Now we could, if we wanted to go one step deeper on that general purpose disc resource, we could make it the Veeam Harden Linux repository.

So that's an immutable copy there, but also we need something offsite. We have to be ready, not just for ransomware, malware and things like that. But even today still, we have to be ready for fire, flood and blood. So the offsite copy is really important there. And we put that in a object storage with immutability. So it was ready to go. >> Yeah, so it's weird how these use cases kind of start to string themselves along because my next challenge to my data center engineering and what I put forward to your team was, well, what happens if I had a smoking hole?

I have the data and object storage in AWS should not be able to simply recover to AWS. >> Yeah. >> If I had a smoking hole. >> Yeah, so that's exactly right. You could go, I guess I should back up that portability discussion that we just spoke about. Veeam's ready for that in that an image based backup by Veeam, all you need is the data in the bucket. You don't need a catalog, a media server, any prior knowledge of the infrastructure that can really be a benefit in the smoking hole scenario.

So yeah, the backups that are in the object storage are ready to drive recovery to another cloud, to a cloud that starts with A, a cloud that starts with G, anything you want. And a piece of advice for the listeners here, and I've seen some things not have a positive ending here. If you put backup data in the cloud encrypted with your own encryption password, I like to say, Keith, encrypt your data in the cloud or someone else will do it for you.

>> So thinking of encrypting data in the cloud or somebody else, I like that. >> Yeah. >> Or somebody else will do it for you. >> Yeah. >> Let's talk about immutability because getting it to the cloud by itself, if it's there, someone compromises my AWS account. They can just simply delete the bucket. >> No, they can't. Unless they opened a ticket with AWS. I did a demo for an analyst, Keith, no joke. I set 60 days of immutability.

Guess how long I had to wait to take that data out? >> 60 days? >> 61. >> Oh. >> So yeah, it it's absolutely, it's, you'd have to involve the account team with AWS. But again, that shouldn't be the only copy. I want a copy on PREM. And those become layers of resiliency because speaking frankly, the worst of scenarios that I've seen in terms of outcomes are when people don't have those multiple copies, that's the recipe for disaster.

>> So let's talk about one last topic area, which me and you have talked about over the years. Veeam entering the enterprise base. For years, I've known Veeam as this company that caters to the SMB. And a few years ago, you guys made a splash and said we're going to enter the enterprise space. We're going to deal with 'cause at the time, you didn't do bare metal. You didn't do the things that my core customers needed. >> We didn't check all the boxes.

>> Yeah. >> Are you checking the boxes now? >> We're definitely checking the boxes, but Keith, that's the other perception that I have to deal with as well. And we can look at market share data, but some of the other analysts that track that, we're tied globally from market share. And it actually is interesting. We're tied with Dell EMC globally from market share of the enterprise data protection market, as they track it. A statistical tie, it's too close to call, but we're on a growth pattern.

And our opportunity is indeed in the enterprise. I will be the first to admit, our roots are in SMB. We capture the hearts and minds of people using our products from the home lab to the hospital, from the basement to the bank. That's how we've come to market. And we've been very effective with it. But we have a lot of opportunities. Same for the US federal government. The North American enterprise market, US federal government, we have a lot of opportunity there.

And if you look around the world, we're number one in MNM, we're number one in LATAM. I believe we're market share number one in APJ but not the case in North America. That's the area to tackle. And we'll get there, I've got nothing but evidence that Veeam will overcome. >> So Rick, I really appreciate you stopping by talking about Veeam, one, sponsoring the road trip.
