virtualized geek tech talk 18. hi you're listening to virtualized geeks tech talk episode 18. you know what though we're following up just a couple of days after doing episode 17 because uh i posted a blog post on tech target on uh network virtualization the last tech talk was on software defined networking so i figured i'd follow up another quick hit video talking about the post over on tech target uh the tech the post on tech target is meant to be a little bit inflammatory uh as you guys know i am a fan of network virtualization so i'm not by far a detractor of the technology but as far as my patience for the technology getting to where it needs to be to use in a reference architecture or real client site just not there yet uh we would uh ideally like to do some of the things that i've talked about in the past i've been able to use any ports to basically create any virtual switch or any virtual network nfv device that you like but that really doesn't exist today so the post overall tech target kind of took a stab at the current state of network virtualization and i called it uh for lack of a better term vaporware uh for those of you who are not familiar with vaporware vaporware is a terminology that was coined uh well over a decade ago probably even longer than that maybe going maybe 20 years now on software or hardware that is announced by a vendor but not yet released i had a pretty bad experience with vaporwork vaporware earlier in my career you can look over at the tech target blog and i uh referenced that but basically a lot of administrators kind of made hay or basically the opposite of making hey they uh bet their career on vaporware products that weren't released and they got burned uh i got i came close to getting burned with some vaporware back in the 90s and ever since then i've just been weary of it so you know the bottom line is do i think uh network virtualization is vapor where you know what by definition yes it hasn't been released at least not to the extent we do have uh virtual appliances that play the role of network virtualization so network virtualization from the purest sense there are most definitely network appliances you can buy virtual routers uh virtual load balancers virtual firewalls uh obviously virtual switches are uh about but when you think about kind of uh virtual networking nirvana when you have a hypervisor sitting at the top of the network stack uh at the control plane that doesn't exist today um there's not a hypervisor or network hypervisor that i'm aware of uh vmware has announced their en sx product which will ship one day and again one day is by definition the uh one day for a software hardware product that's not yet released vape where well that's a quick hit for episode 18 of virtualized geeks tech talk so you can find uh the link to the tech target post and the show notes thanks
