virtualize the key Tech talk episode 20. com or whether or not virtual Network virtualization is vaporware or if it's real got a lot of reaction from it uh mainly negative and and I think uh that was probably the intent on whether or not uh Network virtualization was real or was it something that was still in the mix so I thought it'd be a good idea to add some context around my assertion that Network virtualization was vaporware so in my ideal World Network virtualization would be kind of the mature industry wide assess because of where Cisco Juniper and a lot of other uh Network vendors that's pushing their own fabric Solutions such as Q Fabric and the Nexus 7 000 um I believe is called fabric path Solutions on where they take their traditional Network hardware-based Solutions extend ethernet uh to a flat Network throughout across multiple devices and pretty much bypass the concept of spanning tree as we know it today you know that's the fabric approach versus what I think I've talked about on the Block in the past which was a true Network virtualization where you have basically commodity switches or I don't even want to call them switches they're commodity endpoints that uh talk to some Network hypervisor such as NSX or some other competing technology that handles all of the logic uh all of the back plane or the switching fabric that that logic stuff that you would put on Asics you'd have running on commodity x86 servers this allows the ability for those Network ports to be any port so let's say you have some super fast inner interconnect it doesn't matter what it is interfinaband uh 10 gigabit Ethernet doesn't matter connecting your core data center and the endpoints in theory because you have these fast interconnects you can make any port on any device on your lower on your physical Network any logical device you want and you want to have an intrusion protection uh portal hanging off a port that's in your closet on the on one of your closet switches sure no problem you want to have a firewall uh in a remote closet on you know this could be extended over the or the win you want to have a firewall for a local port in Chicago or a local virtual Network in Chicago located in your data center in Phoenix no problem because of the ability of because of the capability of the virtualized network you're no longer bound by the underlying physical Hardware on where you can place logical ports for any device so you can have a logical firewall that spins five different physical locations and looks as if it's one firewall at a one at one virtual at a single virtual Data Center to me this kind of network virtualization Nirvana and that's the part where I think it's you know vaporware when I say vaporware of course you know Network virtualization itself is in Vapor where I can buy a virtual firewall I can buy uh obviously virtual switches open switch has used the point deployment there's an awful lot of v1000s out there uh there's a network based uh v-shield and uh what VMware is doing with v shield and the V show API is pretty uh pretty amazing the throughput that you can get through a virtual firewall is pretty impressive so Network virtualization itself from the when you think about the um basics of the uh basic Network NFL mfv on device yeah they exist but the Nirvana of being able to pause rewind your network as you would do in a x86 virtualization world today I'm I'm standing by my statement that today that that's uh the death paperwork however I did meet with uh the VMware Chief Network architect and we had a pretty cool discussion where he's going to help kind of bring me up the speed on what's in the market and hopefully I can come back to you guys and we can have a real conversation about and have you know some some delimitaries on what's real and what's fake and what's kind of coming down the pipeline well that's it for this episode of virtualized Geeks Tech talks I appreciate all the positive feedback the negative feedback the feedback in general was just uh well worth the conversation talk to you guys next week for episode 21.
