hey how's it going to skew Towser from the CTO visor day come and we are still in beautiful San Francisco Cisco made the comment earlier that it's like being back at home that vmworld back in San Francisco you get all the sights and sounds the smells of San Francisco it is an awesome place to hold a conference VMworld 2019 about 20,000 people strong amongst those people are partners customers analysts all talking about VMware and specifically this VMware HPE relationship and know to better people that to
have on the program then both with very similar title so it makes it easy there are long titles really easy senior directors of Alliance for VMware and HPE respectively I have Britt Sullivan and so yeah busy crazy busy we just kicking off though all of his sister companies and talks about the relationship with HP try and true HPE when I started my career in vSphere was the number one seller of what was then ESX correct and to this day still a huge engine behind VMware sales
told us about the importance of his relationships yes yeah first off what 19 years in the making right now this partnership you've been there a decade I've been the company 19 years and then I actually got to help draft the first contract we had to Cosell with each other and that relationship was built from the very beginning and the advent of what virtualization could deliver to our joint customers and we we both jumped in as two organizations our field jumped in our customers most importantly jumped
in and we begin the journey of driving an innovation engine to deliver new features and functionality and the relationship has ballooned there's definitely areas with with the broader kind of ownership of Dell that we have to spend our time to get our companies aligned and rallying around but to cpap Gelson here as you said stand up on stage and reiterate that we're going deeper together we're innovating and delivering new consumption models for our technology is a great testament for how far we've come and how far
we have yet to go so it's a great and mature relationship Jeff mentioned you know like any long-standing relationship there are challenges but we find the safe harbors together where we can work and deliver on what our customers are asking us to do together because that's the most important driver for both companies and I think that's why we're able to to navigate find those safe harbors because our North Star there is what that customer is looking for and so from the beginning of you know these
spheres have 19 years ago 20 in February you know we started working together to deliver a better experience to the customers so you know early on HP did optimization so that vSphere and HP was an ideal combination for customers and then Jeff mentioned blooming well it's not just virtualizing compute anymore we're virtualizing networking we're virtualizing storage we're doing optimizations in those areas too and we mesh our management together so that customers can use our tools together and get unique capabilities from the combinations that they can't
get from doing them on their own so Brent talked to me about this safe harbor space because HP still very much has the even HPE transformed still very much has the ear of the CIO you're in HPE is in a unique situation and then there's this you know this we have to address the tension in the room there's this relationship with Dell Dell very much wants to be what are some of the safe harbors here inconsistently customers are like you know what this is what I
want from HPE in VMware where you guys come join me into an account and when we're working together and the customers saying you know this is what I want you to bring to the table you know VMware operates as VMware not as a company owned by another company and that's what drives the innovation that we do together that's what helps us all together it's delivering on what that customer wants not looking at you know what and it may you know this may sound cheesy but we
built the size of the customer bases install base we have between us it's just stretching far reaching globally enterprises mid market small businesses vertical industries and they all want something that's going to deliver the expected outcomes they have to they're so in many cases while we may have all say competing technology or competing offerings the customers can have an informed decision - fine you know bet yeah I want to have the best tools in my toolbox and be able to truly satisfy that customers need on
whatever tool is needed so the fact that we you can't you can't win you can't capture the entire customer install base we have with one thing you need to have a portfolio of offerings and you can't lose sight that it's the customers outcome that should dictate which is the best offering to go satisfy that customers need so let's humble brag here a little bit what tell me about the great things that HPE is in a unique situation to do with VMware that virtually no other competitor
can do yeah well number one I would say with the advent of convergence you know we we build renowned converged infrastructure platform called HPE synergy I'm just revolutionising the efficiencies that can be delivered to on-prem and allowed to be federated into public cloud well guess what through Coe engineering Co innovation we take the management plane and we integrate with VMware vCloud foundations we did a deep dive on that earlier today you its we HP and VMware first to deliver that functionality together we see some of
my competition now trying to catch up but we keep the pedal to the metal on the innovation engine that will allow us to deliver incremental value than our competition to me hands down that currently cannot be touched by anyone else in the marketplace right now I agree with that and then there's also phase you know HP was the design partner for V balls and we did indeed add one that or other you know there's more work that we can do together you know storage continues to
play an important role in every customer right and bringing unique v-ball integrations together is how we can keep delivering on summer needs the announcement this morning around Green Lake synergy and VMware cloud foundation together in green light being able to you know pay in as a service kind of model not just for the cloud providers before the the infrastructure that you have is is a game-changer and you know we have the opportunity and there's a demo you can see on the floor of where there's VCF
and synergy running together could be in green light connecting to the public cloud and workloads moving back and forth so you can get the you know pay for what you use model up here and you can get it here too and you can connect those and you can do that all with HBO VMware so a lot of a lot of decisions are made just on past performance so as we look into the future and you know there's new company at the new company coming up whether
it's back or that RDR or data protection compute etc they are looking to get the ear of the CIO the CTO the VP of IT infrastructure how can we trust that HPE in VMware will continue to innovate together like show me like that what's the kind of the centerpiece of that innovation to say you know what we're just if we're not just more reliable we're just as cool as the cool new kids I think the number one thing is we have a shared common vision of
where our customers are going with regards to their IT the way they want to consume it we have commonality knowing that customers increasingly want to move towards a consumption based model increasingly they want to have a combination of on-prem and cloud resources for their applications increasingly we see er jointly we see our customers wanting to do business with us in a manner that HPE will stand behind with the full power and might of our support organization l1 l2 working with on l3 escalation paths so I
think that strategy is the foundation when we know we jointly our customers really want to move towards that direction of our strategy that's the North Star as Brent mentioned that were following and day 19 or years ago we were just talking about you know what kind of virtualization performance we can put it on a DL 580 man now look at where we are now we're not it's not about that it's much much bigger now talking about moralist energy into the VFC into the into as Europe
which is the conversation that we had earlier it's way different than what I when I talked visa fees and I was on the phone late night troubleshooting vSphere on a deal by baby with HPE support so you know it talks to the strength of relationship well guys I really appreciate you guys taking the time out of your busy schedules to come on the program I appreciate HPE for sponsoring the CTO dose you heard it here I've not been shy about the relationship between dill and being
where my concern about that and where does that leave a player like HPE who's very trusted in enterprise and enterprise customers still very much desired deep Alliance hope this has been a insightful conversation around that that standing of the relationship if you guys want to know more about this relationship follow the conversation today on Twitter we're at CTO advisor on the web hashtag CTO dos talk to you next CTO DOS
