hey guys going it's Keith Townsend from the CTL advisor you know what it's a little late coming but it is here my hot take on Cerritos presentation from tech field day 21 one of the reasons why I'm delete with this is because zurdo did a in da session which was announcing zurtle a touring tech field day and it's kind of confusing when you do a tech field day presentation then you do a tightly coupled NDA session right after it's and it's hard to decipher what you
should say what you should not I accidentally tweeted out that zurtle was a partner with Google VMware engine and that hadn't been announced yet so I retracted the tweet and I just said you know what I'll wait to do the hot take well here's the hot tape there's a couple of things I want to focus on first the thing that I'm pretty excited for if I were exert or customer I'm not they are sponsoring the virtual event that's happening April 21st you should go in registers
CTO a VC comm is free but I am really appreciative of a feature that it offers which is basically a rollback feature this is as a result I think of the second thing that I'm excited about when it comes to 0-7 ATO and a tato when i've run dr test one of the biggest challenges has always been the fear of contaminating production by bringing up dr and accidentally running transactions in dr and needing to reconcile transactions that's been running dr and rolling that back to less
good known state and production it's just is literally one of the highest fears that typically goes up to the CIO in CFO sense i mainly deal with sa P it is very very very complex to replicate storage and just simply dial a now not back inside of the application and say that the state that we entered in D our needs to be rolled back to a previous state application is like si P simply don't work like that so zurdo built into their solution a logging feature
why is this how is this different than typical storage replication well one we're replicating the whole VM state so I'm not simply saying you know what the Storch that I had in production I have it on a different set of compute which may have a different state configuration state in my D Arcite and I'm rolling back between those two disk images that doesn't change the applications thing if that makes any sense the application state makes it makes a difference then it matters especially in dr when
we talk about kubernetes and kubernetes being built for to manage containers which are stateless well in the enterprise world we deal with state the advantage of replicating the whole virtual machine and being able to cut over based on your dr test or dr event requirements the whole virtual machine or whole application landscape is that you get these knobs which are built on the logging feature of zertal the second thing that i found really really interesting from the presentation is that cyril entered the data protection fight
the house data protection different than dr dr is a subset of data protection data protection at a at a whole world as we talked about the infrastructure mainly deals with the ability to backup files so of zertal is keeping some type of log of the state of our data wouldn't it make sense if i could just roll back or use those logs as backups as granular backups instead of looking at the macro of the virtual machine why can't I look at the micro of the fouls
that exist in a virtual machine if that's how I was like it's heavy lifting it is it was introduced in 07.00 a doddle kind of extends that capability with even more features we expect from backup applications I was pretty skeptical on whether or not zero could deliver on the promise of entering the backup domain they are starting to come out with enterprise features I care about one of the things that I really had a tough time wrapping my head around was the ability for them to
use their logging technique to get the retention schedule that I want if I have a retention schedule 4 to 5 10 years how are you gonna do that with logging I highly suggest you go back and look at the tech field day videos to understand the technology behind the process but zurdo is making that leap one of the things that that Heather takes me from being a zero customer what I don't have a infrastructure to maintain since I've become a analyst and an advisor full-time but
from a traditional customer customer perspective the howling of physical workloads zurdo is very much a VM centric tool not to me not to say that you can't use 0 to do storage replication when the storage provided by a VM infrastructure there's some really interesting things to do but I've always just had a heavy mix of physical workloads like hp-ux PC systems as400 etc that all went back to a V Max or Hitachi storage array and I've always had to just deal with storage level replication so
