EMCWorld 2015 - ScaleIO is free
Transcript
hi keith townsend from virtualizedgeek.com with a out of band virtualized geek virtualized geek 2.0 we're going to talk about emc world couldn't wait until the weekend to talk about some of this because some of the uh back and forth on twitter between emc and nutanix and i think i had to get my thoughts kind of out there it was either a blog post or a video i chose a video because it's a pretty free-flowing topic and i didn't really want to lose kind of the excitement
in the tone of my voice and kind of and lose some of the importance of the message emc announced that they're going to give away skill io for free so basically obviously they're going to make some money off of it via support because you wouldn't you wouldn't go into support or you wouldn't go into a production environment without having support for even tier two workloads which is what skill i o is pretty much geared towards i'm not gonna get into any of the performance metrics between
scaleio and nutanix i think nutanix has a really good story out there with the scale of which is deployed in existing customer sites scale io not quite that yet i don't think emc has made a real push for deploying scale io versus uh the federation's vsan solution as well as vnx which i think uh scaleio would complete compete with quite a bit so why give away scale io my opinion fairly obvious it's nutanix and the rest of the hyper converge plays uh this really eats at
the some i think some of the initial uh bottom end of the nutanix height hyper converge infrastructure plays that geared towards uh test and dev workloads if you give away something on the class of skill io which is designed to compete with traditional hybrid converged infrastructures are i saying traditional hyper converged infrastructure when this segment is fairly new uh it's going to cause some disruption it's pretty interesting some of the back and forth i've seen on twitter between uh nutanix emc uh chad sackett was very
kind of uh he went uh rule number one you don't go negative he did go negative in his blog post on scaleio being better than nutanix but from a customer perspective if i was doing a proof of concept or even a trade study between the two the things that would intrigue me about both products one nutanix has a very good value proposition of being a hyper converged solution in which i get support all in one box what i don't care much for about hyper converged solutions
especially uh solutions like nutanix that are all-in-one solutions where i can't separate the software from the hardware when i have lower class workloads like test and dev i have to dedicate a hundred grand or whatever the price of nutanix systems they're not cheap i have to dedicate that price uh to keep a consistent uh environment between my test and my production environments skill io gives me the opportunity to be consistent if i'm going to use a software solution for my storage in both prod and test
and dev i can have the consistent platform across those environments so i can choose to go with white boxes for my uh test and dev environment and then i can go with a full class i think vce announced their uh evo rack solution which will have scale io in it in theory i can do this with nutanix nutanix has a community edition which i can kick the tires but bottom line is i can't separate the software from the hardware so if i was to do a
trade study i think that was would be kind of the line of thinking at goal and understanding exactly how much value there is in the entire nutanix stack versus having the flexibility of building my own infrastructure out with scale io is is a potential uh solution for my storage platform other news viper v i pr their orchestration two their cross platform orchestration two was open sourced which makes it a pretty interesting solution you think about emc's openstack play their uh viper being open source and now
scale io been given away away from free emc is kind of doing their light imitation of microsoft i'm starting to not know what this company company is well look forward to posting more blog posts about this whole emc world 2015 some of the major announcements and giving my slant on uh or opinion on a lot of the activity coming out of the conference this week wish i would have attended it but you know it's vegas it's may and it's vegas talk to you guys next talk
