Dell Technologies Cloud - VMworld 2019
Transcript
welcome back to the CTO dose at VMworld 2019 we're recording this one Wincy which is like the week after late feels like two weeks of action activity in three days yes being world is an intense segment we've had you guys long before so we're going to just get right to the meat of it wrong share with us then announcements wrong being world to me 19 when it comes to do yeah so you know a few months ago I dealt with nominees world we introduced the Dell
technologies flower to the world which was the best of VMware cloud software and the best values infrastructure tightly integrated together to really help provide consistent experience for our customers across the public cloud private line in the edge and we built on that momentum admir world so we have a few key announcements first one we kept hearing from customers was what's what are you doing to help us support container container based applications right our our customers are telling us that their developers are hanging on the door
or knocking on the door depending on how you look at it to be able to build applications and there's second one second piece of feedback we've got so we've got something started so we've got something to help them with that with automated deployment of VMware PKS on the x-ray of using vm o'clock foundation to help further for the kubernetes second one is second piece of feedback we got from customers is well we are announced the VX Rio and VCF offer which is a hyper-converged infrastructure base
and customers love it they also want more flexibility in terms of how they build their infrastructure for that we've announced something called Delta cloud validated designs these are essentially reference architectures for Delhi MCS server storage and networking tightly coupled again with we have our foundation to help give customers a little bit more third one this is the one that got the most romantic coverage at a tell technologies world was are they are fully managed data centers a service offer we have their cloud and EMC we
had announced at at all technologies world and I can't tell you how many conversations I've had with sales teams and customers saying what is he gonna be ready but is it gonna be so we're we're proud to announce as now now available in the United States so we'll get to that third announcement quick hopeful we'll spend a lot of time on that because all I'm here to do is is ews out polls so we'll talk about that but first let's talk about kuvings when I think
about kubernetes I naturally think you know pivotal is a great part of that conversation and the folks at pivotal done a lot to make tile foundries run in containers and partner with being where all the PKS story when I think of containers though I don't necessarily think of deal first that's not you know that I think Adele is bare metal but I don't think about going to Dell or health around containers Nick share with me what what's the innovation that people should start paying attention to
Dell and there your your containers Lawrence so I think the big thing that people are finding right now is that they have to operate their clouds differently than their data centers and that's really problematic right and I think all three of our our things that we've announced here are really oriented around consistency and choice so I get this great experience when I go to the cloud I could be cloud native I can adopt containers well I really want to bring that back into my data center
we hear from customers right why do you mind my old ass why is it so hard to bring that you know down into my data center take care of them so by adding it to VX rail and making it a part of our Dell technologies cloud platform what we're doing is we're providing that consistent experience across clouds so that your developers that are left on trend don't get left behind so we get Google's Chad Satya the one last year techworld acne wasn't all these programs on
a different program and that acts them us that chat why should you you work for pivotal now you can stop cheerleading Dill's HCI solution you can be truthful with me tell me if there's anything face milking Peaks built in this kind of chat yeah yeah tell me what's face milk about about pivotal in Dell technologies a lot of that was around orchestration that was a year and a half ago yeah what have customers actually seen since then so what what would bring a market I mean
I don't know if it's a space melting at some of chad's other stuff but but it's definitely something we're very proud of is you know you can go into the VMware cloud foundation basically the vSphere client now you can actually because of the joint work that's done with pivotal VMware and the exponents joint engineering work right the VX no team has opened up its API is to the VMware engineering team so that the VMware Club Foundation can actually call internally at the ideas that were not
exposed to anybody else right so that there's really tight integration happening there so what you can do now with the speak s announcement is you can go to your VMware cloud foundation instance go to your management console basically set up a workload domain which is automatically configured using an NSX t4b cares right you just snap a button and then it will deploy it for you and then you can go turn around your to your developers and say okay I've got the same aren't ready for you
whereas before just think about you what you will have to do to get something a kubernetes environment upgrade you'll be using a series of open source tools a lot of patchwork running scripts command lines it's a lot of work and what would your developers do in that much time well they're not going to sit around and wait for you they're just gonna go and go create you have another instance of shadow it9 it's instance and they're that you're hoping is secure and everything like that so
what we're doing now is we're giving our IT team is an opportunity to be able to enabling them just go back to the developers and say okay we have something that's ready and it's production ready is also if this application takes off we know we'll be able to support it and then the last thing I'll just say is this is this is because this is one vehicle x-ray oh it's the same platform that you use for your traditional applications right a traditional versus attribution so you
don't have to go to something separate it's the same management console it's the same experience you are just applying a different water alright so let's move on to the second analysis which is VCF you guys gotta help me understand this whole VCF records architecture thing I can order some Dale PowerEdge servers today with vSphere pretty small yes and it just what's the value of this bcoz I mean yet yeah I have enough time people the staff has enough time doing other things what what value is
this BC ahead here provide okay I can give you a context there so what we're doing there with the magnetic cloud validator designs is we work with vmware again here to make sure that things like we realized off the strip or me realize automation right the really high higher value-added services that can help make your IT team more efficient it's now working with our power in time activities for example that EMC PowerMax valiums unity what that means is you know what we end up seen with
with customers Keith is that there's there's really two kinds of you know two camps one is their customers were already using VMware cloud foundation to do automation and you know orchestration and things like that and they want to bring their traditional infrastructure into that cloud operating model they want that same benefit extent to the traditional applications so great for customers without power edge and or you know our storage memory storage in the infrastructure we can now do that in fact Danny MC is the first to
you know validate our primary storage with third-party primary storage with vml our foundation right so that's I think that's one one camp of customers ii campo customers are customers who are looking to you know take advantage of VMware cloud foundations for their existing investments right or there or maybe they're buying the right brand new you know PowerMax infrastructure and they want to be able to manage that the way using that same consistent experience and then they want to be able to take the workloads are running
on there and move it to the cloud with the same policies now if you were to do it without VM at our foundation on primary storage it takes a lot of work so because of that tight coupling now we're hoping customers are going to be able to take advantage of that experience and there's also a lot of value in this underlying infrastructure right so you have an application sometimes they need to scale you know compute network and storage independently or you know maybe you need to
add a best support that's what we're doing here is we're bringing that storage value and that compute value back into VMware pzf so I get that so I'm getting that story now so the whole idea was that you know what there's a higher level abstraction because there's higher value yes using stuff bare metal is fine if you want to do that matter thank you guys you will deploy two bananas with that's what I really want but what I need to do is provide an opportunity for
my smart people to work at a higher abstraction so they had a higher value now these is what this third announcement is about and it was an exciting announcement if people some people in the community get a little worried I gotta tell you you know the wait hold on you're going to if you're going to manage my vSphere vfc environment all the stuff we just talked about if Dell is gonna roll a box over exemplifying that's going to roll a box into my premises to do
that where's the conversation like what what it what is the conversation like we heard a news at Deltek world but what is the conversation now that's become real look at that I I mean you've been you've managed IT teams right you work with them all the time the thing that we find when we talk to customers is that no matter how many be how many people you have a large IT team is there was always more work to do right yeah right I mean have you
ever been in the team a bit like I'm good I've never gone back to my CFO I said you know what yeah you can take two or three wives that count because that's you know we we've done all the things that I'm really here yes yeah I mean think about what happened when when cloud just started right running club people had similar concerns oh there's this other provider that's gonna be managing but what happened was that that enabled teams to basically be able to focus on
a higher higher level more value-added services and what we're bringing to market here with our with Adele technologies cloud data center as a service offer is essentially the same same agility hands of operations to on-premise infrastructure because why this is happening is because of customer demand customers are getting VMware Danny MC look I love using the cloud the flexibility the agility the portal based access and provisioning that's what I want all my infrastructure to work like so what we're trying to bring to them here is
this and I fundamentally believe this will allow you know it is our opinion that this will allow our I our customers IT teams basically focus on that are making a difference to the business versus you know you know caching managing in updates the BIOS is that really what you want your team's to focus on I think the number one thing we hear from customers is these upgrades are painful right so we want to bring that same experience so the teams can focus on other more valuable
things so need make this real what am i touching when you know and I have a box this is out of my data center but I'm not managing the bodies I understand this and yeah I've seen this appliance model for stuff like SAT I know that I'm going to Hana enemies but this is vSphere and I involved me spear on so you know computer the storage nodes I do all of that stuff today what am i touching with this new solution I mean you're still going
through those processes for things like or monitoring but when there's a you know service level event when you're installing it you know we have VMware managing that for you so you know you can move up the stack and kind of work to deliver the right things for your your users so so just to be more specific the IT teams will set up and manage the applications does not manage the virtual machines there but what's happening here is that if there's a problem at the infrastructure level
so for example oh there's a hardware failure okay you know the VMware does technologies are working in the background automatically remediate that situation will dispatch somebody to your datacenter right location at that fixed if there's a network latency issue you don't have to file a ticket we're going to be careful for you you can actually go online on the VMware cloud interface look and see oh there's these many kickers filed on my behalf there was a network latency issue that was happening and I'm gonna be
able to take care of that they're working on under this the resolution time but you know there's still so much work to be done for example who's going to set up data protection right well it's gonna be the IT team right who's gonna manage the applications who's gonna decide on load balancing and figure out you know which applications will sit on which me and that's still the IT team and they're gonna do that with the vSphere client they don't have to use something that they're not
using before right they want to migrate workloads between their existing infrastructure to this or from here to the flower back they're still using HCS and they're doing for anything else yeah we're gonna have to get county guys to return so we can go deep today because I have a bunch of questions around like where those that bring where does it work well where's there additionally animation left will be done there's this misconception by itself well that's it for this episode of the CTO dos Thank You
