[Music] hey how's going to keep Towson from the CTO visor that condom dwelling John Hildebrand John welcome to the CTO dose mmm this is now we're becoming a regular thing at this particular point so you've done both the CTO dose and the podcast and it seems like every time we have yawn we talk we're talking DevOps stuff I thought we're infrastructure yes well I you know one of the things that we're noticing like in the classic infrastructure company we've seen movements things like well we will
talk about here code divisions within whether VMware has got their own code division you talk about some of the developer connections that NetApp has been doing over the last couple of years and getting to the point that we're gonna talk about here emc code two now what I forget what the full name was going to be I still remember it is the NC code right nothing was like the cold team or I think it was from EMC calls the daily MC cold to now the cold
team and now to dissolve so now I dissolve which is the conversation so I if you guys hadn't heard the names Dale EMC decided to dissolve there wasn't it advocacy program a developer advocacy program or was it more of a traditional we're gonna splash our open source and have advocates they're a little unclear it to me when when you look at what they brought to the table from now personally I never had to engage that group but we've had members especially you can architect field a
group members who've had to work with them so whether it's advocacy as far as just getting developers excited about open source initiatives or themselves making components one of the things that comes to mind is Rex ray right which was essentially a docker plugin to utilize EMC authority on the backend yeah so there was kind of a mix and match of both of those going on at that point all right so I guess the question is Bill is an infrastructure company they bill boxes whether you're talking
about we tech field day 16 we just got through your presentations about it scream my old v-max last week Dale introduced a VX block so very much laptops computers physical hardware company does a physical hardware company really benefit from a open source developer program or is it more a benefit to the community and potential customers well ia really when you start putting it in those towards those sorts of frames when you talk about Dell being I one don't accept I hesitate sometimes I throw the term
legacy infrastructure company around but we are talking about silicon in the data center we're talking about metal you know things things that matter to people who are putting it in walls with big big air units and trying to our Emperor happy so from that perspective I think well I you do have to take a little bit now of what all's under Dells umbrella awful lot VMware RS a pivotal the they have software companies that are associated with the Dell technologies brand or a pure plate software
companies so is it that role of those software companies to take the dáil infrastructure and and add value in that software value on top which it they'll have software to value we haven't developing relationship directly with developers and I think that's personally I'm starting to believe that that may take what was the function of the old EMC code division right may now fall under one of those other software entities especially when you consider the fact it wasn't unnoticed on on my perspective those two presentations we
sat through from Dell EMC storage that there was a heavy use this with VMware influence right so if you take that in mind now you put you're focusing more the interaction layer with that hardware less at a direct Hardware interaction and with the hypervisor you take then what's a pivotal brings to the table by working on top of the hypervisor now they may focus developer relations more at the pivotal Cloud Foundry layer than at you know a PowerEdge server or or or a v-max and that
makes this direct consumption of infrastructure and technology happens at that pivotal level the Dale EMC Cole was more of what you deal with which is dealt DevOps automation of the infrastructure integration of the infrastructure with new technologies so maybe that is more of a pivotal type of role I still think that there's opportunity I know you said Cisco has a really great program and helping you understand the UCS and the ability to automate UCS and all of them well and the same sort of thing if
you want to go a little bit to one of the competitors in the storage space NetApp is kind of doing that so hot Wells a big big big dev ops and developer advocate so they make a big investment in that well and it's one of the things we go back to when NetApp acquired SolidFire one of the things that I had no realization about was how much NetApp was already doing in the open source community before they acquired net out right or before they acquired SolidFire
so they just added more of that segment into the open source initiative and now have essentially two different heads to kind of go after that it a previous tech field they in Boston that I went to we kind of got a combined effort this is what we're doing for the kubernetes community this is what we're doing for the docker community this is what we're doing for OpenStack things like Trident and those sorts of things so we're we're seeing and I think that's resonating with that particular
community over there it's just when you go back to the Dell example it may just be that maybe they see it in that in that realm of bullet pivotal take this and we kind of got redundant developer ad advocacy groups when we're still kind of working our entire ecosystem yeah there still makes others feel Dell technology overall still making an investment so John if people want to find out more about you and what you're doing how can they reach you socially the law yeah I you
