course and I'm Keith Townsend from the CTO advisor at CTO advisor on Twitter and the Cisco folks gave a demo this morning of ACI managing kubernetes cool cool technology yeah but how that network layer yeah well and especially with containers where they're so ephemeral that containers popping up and disappearing you can't rely on your network ID n-type ackles into a switch it's seven so that whole automation stage is really important only other way I can imagine you do it is by allocating blocks of IP addresses
and saying well then you have to be a very common solution people put their own or you know you set up your f5 load balancer and you say you know from this IP address to this IP address is a web server and from this IP address to that IP address is a database server and then how many appear the load balancer can beat them and you know if they exist but unless you're a hundred percent ipv6 when you start doing that with containers where you might
have a thousand a link to it at a time there two ephemeral and you don't have enough addresses to work with so you know I was actually just thinking just now and apply Cisco big box all right in front of it to continue that orchestration so it became a pretty interesting separation of UDC the presenter used a concept DevOps team versus networking team which I don't know if I've ever have heard it pitted that way it's kind of like you know either you accept DevOps Enterprise
Y or throw IT you know but I think we like to say DevOps is enterprise-wide but on all the implementations I've seen in the wild are developers operations and a person that's kind of a go-between yeah I mean if most of the DevOps I've seen are developers who are conscious that obviously we'll have to eventually take this over and they want to go fast or it's about operations of automating with tools like ansible or shaft so I think it's probably more of an indication that we
don't know where the market is going you know we don't know and Cisco doesn't know know where the market is going the management model for the infrastructure is of necessity changing we are automating much more than we used to because the scale at which that which we're doing things is larger and timeframes that we're doing cruising is much shorter you mean the one truth of the data center today is that it's much more than about right we're talking about a large is larger or talking about
a larger number of smaller things which in terms of what's the scale of what I have to manage it's the number not how big each one is one mainframe was easier to manage than 10,000 x86 servers but and so we haven't figured out that that interconnection between legacy infrastructure management and this whole DevOps in managing a thousand different things we thought OpenStack would bring everybody together and it really it really hasn't yeah you know it may still so what personally I hope you know if OpenStack
doesn't end up being and everyone builds it builds their data center as a private cloud with OpenStack II that at least some of the OpenStack projects become standard a beyond yes you know I think what are one of my one of my high horses is that I want as a virtualization in when I wear my virtualization had been had I want to be able to say to recenter or two whatever other platform about running I'm gonna create this VM this VM should be on VLAN 47
right and now that means that this VM is being instantiated in this cluster and now VLAN 47 has to exist on every other host in that cluster so that when DRS moves it around it's automatically there and all that and the port the host facing ports on the switches have to have VLAN 47 and so VLAN should be able to talk to the internal D switches using whatever protocol V V ever uses internally and externally to the switches via Neutron to say instantiate feeling in 47
on these ports because I'm gonna need it later but what you just somebody up the standard API ya know standard a standard api's and extensions of our managers from having manager and a storage manager to having more global so just go back to that without standard a few things we really expect something like kubernetes take home so I think that is a good place to end because it is a good question the industry we're not sure Cisco showed two very different demos this morning one was
geared towards turbo violence service provider very open very unsisterly like okay where's the Cisco Engel do this how do you sell me more Siskel hardware and we were taking this completely open approach the other one was okay I'm gonna take this open platform and put a CI on top it which is you know open let's take this are turning it made a proprietary which is much more of what we're used to which tells me Cisco white hasn't figured it out either so if you haven't figured
