is not just a data protection conversation data protection is a is a is a use case for what I think some people a little a secondary data other copy data I don't know what's the really call it other than yeah other than just it's just your data strategy that Department actually may do something now that there's solutions around information so we've talked about a couple of different use cases though we've talked about and we went to detail on this on the podcast so we don't have
to rehash it but we talked about data mobility we've talked about data we've talked about ediscovery we've talked about the ability to do multi cloud support it is a very interesting new approach but you Dean man you talked about something that was a little bit different which is an approach to data that's not typical before we approached data it kind of at that system level and now you guys kind of look at data from a user perspective can you expand upon what they tell you more
than hey I've got this file if you're looking at context of a laptop with the applications they use and you can apply that principle to to your data center to your virtual environment that context or your sequel server where's the context of that particular data natively and be able to put them all together under one umbrella and say okay now all of this is in the context of my enterprise yeah let's do federated search in this yes deliver real value to the different lines of the
business to legal when you have a legal matter it's not just this big progeny pod sure of you know dump everything over the wall solution you know when you need to you know do like disaster recovery we need to just do recovery you know it's in context we need to be able to understand whether or not you know you can protect against ransomware you can understand that data in context that data's not in the same place that all the other data is so mate to make
that super tangible is the use case that I gave more in an earlier conversation was around exchange data you know I worked for a customer that had a legal hold and they had to go back I don't know maybe ten years and the data just happened to be an exchange five five server that ran NT for old so I had to restore it into a virtualized environment and start to recover by the LTO tape I had to buy the drive off of ebay to get the
data back and I still had to fish for the data because I could there was no context no matter of fact metadata to even restore the item first restore the metadata for the tapes before I can even search for the data so we're talking about yeah authority catalog first and then maybe different yeah so that in itself was I think the companies are spending more than a hundred hours of billable hours having me recover data for you know five users and that was a super inefficient
use of resources but also an example what's wrong with data protection as we've looked at it in the past of being you know one the medium was the wrong medium in the past but two we're not looking at this data with any context there's you know this I go into a room or I request some datasets from Iron Mountain of my or whoever it's holding my tapes off-site and and it's just a drawer full of media or tapes a boxes ya know context this came from
that day from this location and this person signed for it that's the three pieces of context you get which is almost almost useless not quite could you leave nowhere yeah yeah into it now it's an everyday operational business value component it's not something you well should we do this no we need to this data needs to be actionable right now we need to derive data from value from this information right now and there has to be a way to do that possibly a way to support
that consistently across yeah and I think you hit the nail on the head you're turning we used to be backup and I'm calling it backed up and you're turning it into data valuation and so mark out like I love that it will init their data protection is you're looking at these new new fangled companies the this ain't this ain't your daddy's data protected anymore there is more than backup now we had we've had a bunch of friends leave comfortable positions to come to startups that do
