1 partners so let's talk about that right after that okay exciting news congratulations first but you know there's seek yield oh I have come after you for sure are you guys in the primary storage space so granted the solution has to use cases that will play into primary solution space but that's really not our core focus right the core focus here and it's been kind of evident through our our vision and some of our strategic roadmap plans maybe look back one year previous right when we announced the hyper scale appliance purpose-built solutions we knew that having a software-defined storage built into a data management platform is key for a couple of reasons but one of the biggest ones is being able to move away from being just that backup and data protection company and helping customers realize there's a number of ways that you can actually unlock that information and we've been talking about open api and ways we can do that but then using a software-defined storage layer that really makes it easy to open and unlock that data and start to use it for other items so ok ok so if I get that you're Henry Chan's software-defined storage capabilities you're buying them for that software-defined storage eligibilities you don't necessarily need to compete with your ecosystem to make that happen so let's dive into kind of the technology for sure side of it before we time technology side of it give you kind of delayed early on how the CTO visor looks at data and dateable ability asset exception we have this model this framework that we call the data structure whether you're public cloud or pram or multi cloud hybrid cloud if you have SATs offering you the one thing consistent is your data across that you need to be able to secure the data and you need to be able to move the data to where it needs to be move to you need to be able to protect the data etc so in our model data protection data management follows under data infrastructure right so it sounds like this edition is falling sweet into that hole you know what doesn't matter where your data resides we are here to help you protect and manage that data is that like the yeah so you're you're hitting really is gonna key points of wine we would collect required hitting as are scarce eto states right there's five core shifts that we're seeing a lot of it is about any cuts from being able to attach to the new technology that's roughly easy to use inside the cloud right well the API is the program other faces that allow them to start to leverage things like AI machine learning and all the new big data big data big data relevant services and what have you so that allows small companies and large people to competitive well as they move towards the clouds more cloud native applications it's multi cloud but then it's also how do I take what I've got on premises and also map that have a true understanding from one thrown into the multi cloud space what I'm managing and how I'm managing so this sort of this soccer to find storage to play allows us to accelerate that vision that we have on what we're doing this offline story inside one platform but more importantly it allows us to solve for a couple of challenges that customers are seeing I think those are going in that direction one most customers as they go towards that more digitally transformed space right they're spending twenty five x more or less opera divine storage etc well they're probably doing that through a number of different solutions especially in the management protection side so you're trying to protect containers protect this cloud the SAS environment while on premises you probably have a proliferation of different management tools and that just drives mana complexity right so the data is fragmented the management tools are fragmented and what that really means if you don't have untenable you know complexities being layered now on top of a already stressed out IT team that may or may not have the skills to continue growing where the distance pressures are pushed so our view of this is exactly where you're at right the data the data management infrastructure this is a perfect play for that because we can now consolidate across the entire gamut of one Prem even out to the edge into the multi cloud space don't start to play in the application sort of modernization projects for how containerization and micro services are being leveraged and pull it all together as one usable manageable understood infrastructure that can span any environment customer one sees so done understand what what we learn at combo go this year as part of the tech build a next experience then you guys help customers with the oil of their infrastructure data with medic right like one of the biggest advantages have been a common customer for the past 20 years I have 20 years of medic how does the image acquisition build upon that capability that's a great question and actually a core value prop the highlight of why this acquisition so powerful so within the Commonwealth Data Manager platform present our potato platform we have the ability to define policies or how they distort we have to go ahead to then map and basically drop and move information to whatever storage or up regions be honest towards run from spinning storage run of random objects where to the cloud we can basically map across the entire gamut and we have the policies and the meta information about everything we want to do that where things get really interesting though is you start to look at the infrastructure quit we've defined the infrastructure offering the rehab is basic to our hyper scale appliance which is just essentially spinning disk that yes we can put some object interfaces on top of it has a software to find play to it you know that's pretty much baby people say they provide a point like if you're a backup or a data protection company you have to have some type of physical platform would be a cloud or appliance you have that base so that the hedvig acquisition just accelerates our ability to apply sort of more robust technologies interfaces access points to that same sort of idea so we look ahead big for what they are a software-defined storage platform the way they can distribute the scale you know integrating that into our product is gonna instantly give us a couple of things one will have the ability to map to any type of storage type so if we wanted to have all flash in some areas of our product to speed the way we can drive a DevOps the server information back and forth great we can do that provision and really provide some that capability so let me break it down into like a typical use case sure if I wanted to use my backup or my sake my backups as analytics and I wanted to you know use leverage I'm gonna get aggressive with this let's say that I want to use Intel octane memory as a later some of this might be the future and then it's all driving the innovation with SAPD and from a storage policy perspective I will say you know like that obtained later the fastest memory I want I want my back or my data set place one for on that platform so I can get business answers as quickly as possible from data that might have from 15 years ago yeah if you can think about you could do to a purpose step and the head thing that had to be the certain storage platform allows us to map into basically all types of storage provide all the access points that you would expect for your face in and out whether it's block storage file storage object etc and then of course our storage policy or our policy control we have we're allowed to say you know what great for that SAT environment it's going to live right there on the fastest storage for however many copies how many days whatever is it you need but then be it behind that will have the storage here and set up already where we can then put it to the next tier of spinning disk or then moving out to the cloud and let this one storage platform across all the environments so I've seen a lot of startups with like kind of this idea of about the history of the data and the you know kind of trust of the enterprise so this puts you on par from a technology perspective with this part of the vision however I can't help by coming back to this point that this comes at a cost of some of your partnerships help me understand how heavy and this capability is gonna have negative it's a combo doesn't step on the toes of an app or a HPE or give me an example of how you would integrate this into an existing customer that that's you know all in on a three part store store jury sure so I guess you mention HTML let's start there so HP you happens to be one of Vic's partners today and they're one of our partners okay so there's already some complementary you know in the field or customers there's some complement reactions that you know obviously HP storage had big of what happy basically computer or horror or co-operators right right at the end of the day there's a whole slew of use cases for whitewood deep storage if you've currently got a net up storage rate and it's running primary workloads chances are you're gonna probably continue doing that it fits the need it probably performs great as snapshot capabilities combo can control that and in this case you know when customers we have that primary storage environment define yes I mean but that primary storage environment will allow CommVault to help to simplify the management and maybe some of the fragmentation of tools or what it takes to drive snapshot or do replication those basically link in with our API is how we can mention control that data and at that point we would use an vague and the software-defined storage layer to simplify the way those backup copies are kept how we can replicate replicate the data across sites maybe make it available in a dr site or colocation maybe work with a service provider if you're doing this as recoveries of service that the service provider it's just another offering to extend that storage layer other locations not go after per say the primary storage environment because in many cases that's already something that a customer has solved they've got multi Multi multi petabytes a large customer environment and we're going to be making sure that we can leverage the storage technology just to improve the way that data is being managed then further used for other use cases that line so you're not necessarily getting into the data so from a presentation perspective if I have a client device literally if I have SAT Hemet in your vision that you just paint is not presenting the source directly to sa P it could it can it can have a capability but if you want to map directly to your primary or net or whatever platform you can still do that the data mover with inhibit combo combined it's just placing the data where it needs to be you can choose to do it through the SDS damage I on that storage array or you can do it through the story itself softly correct right right so let me actually you know the next book I'm going to try and get as much at use for sure can you know for sure go pushes okay when is it all well you got that part now you're making an announcement now when do I see this functionality like what they do after the acquisition closes and I contacted my comm bulbs channel the sales guy and I say I want this that I saw on the CTO tools for any sure so you know you're right so we just announced that the deposition is occurring and there is going to be some depth works of integration work has to happen between their platform our platform making sure that they're smooth and offs between you know both the the headaches occupied storage CommVault and what that next evolution of us together looks like and little what the next combo looks like - I can tell you probably first and foremost you know starting you know day one the first thing we're gonna be looking at and we've already been doing it obviously together with the hectic tending engineers is let's look at all the things that we need to do to ensure the experience from what you see and understand from combo you see and understand from Hetrick become one simple experience together so that's gonna take some development where it doesn't take some time for us to ensure that all right we truly make these things from support to implementation - you know provisioning retirement you name it that's all tied together as one row so that's one key focus that's going to take a little bit of time as you kind of look further on down that path is how do we make sure to be in Grain the architecture of Hedrick software client storage platform as a part of what our data platform is so if we can start to use all the different tiers of storage all the different sort of access API so the controls they have like ground snapshotting and even maybe some things they can do around you plication whatnot within their own platform plus take advantage of their scalable skill scalability of just adding single nodes and growing that up and go all fantastic use cases for a secondary square platform so that's probably the next step we look for is like okay let's ingrain this into our platform and really kind of make that next term of you know the next version of next evolution of where hyper scale continues to grow and change and transform I think it as you see that start to go in that direction I mean we are at a point where storage and data management are starting to come across right we can see that collision course your competitors have to address this and on because data's data and developers don't if you care where the developer the data is the s1 access to it in a timing factor and whether that's sitting in on on tape somewhere or in the cloud or on pram on primary storage they need to identify that data so they can get business questions answer right and it really need to contain in application modernization space you're one of the core benefits everyone's looking for there it's alright I need persistent storage to do this are giving something that's cost-effective that I can quickly provision discard recreate cetera self perfect use case for software-defined storage and I think as we see data management can we see store to sort of converge I think that container space probably the first one where customers will say hey do I really need to have a separate silo to manage the data in the application space and manage what I'm doing for production and manage what I'm doing for backups or long term retention and definitely the cloud is there a way I can simplify all this as one and we'll probably find is you know as those things are converting us up in the initial space because headings technology is really strong when it comes to working with you have - bearnaise and aki dr.
dopler that's a figure which i think they just changed their name to every yeah i forget the 2v2 looking like keywords and i think yeah yeah so they already have some practices for providing that level persistent storage and you know look if we have customers that are looking to go in that direction will absolutely show this as an option - so to kind of go back to the original question when can i get this you know the vision is the vision it will be something we'll execute again so we've got a pretty solid plan how we're going to get there and get there quickly just because we can see where the customer needs are going and that the fragmentation with new technologies it's only getting worse around data data management and all the skills tools are required so we've definitely me not only have our foot on the gas pedal so to speak and we can see this becoming a really important thing you know over the next call it six 12 18 months to start to showcase how these two technologies solution from the secondary storage container had in space well done I really appreciate the opportunity one you got a cognisance exclusive pin for you allowing me to be told for so it was a fun conversation for sure if you enjoyed this conversation you can see more of it while my follow the hashtag CTO dulls one Twitter only pin combo goal is just a little bit over a month from now October 14th through the sixth in Denver in demo that's right if you follow the CTO visor content for any period of time you know that I said that this market segment of data protection is on a collision course for data management it is not a small set of data protection I think is a bad description of the segment it is not about backup anymore it's about being able place data where it needs to be when it needs to be for the applications that require that we acquire that data to answer tough business questions join the conversation has taxi Chiodos challenge combo I think they have a pretty decent comp record over the past couple years of changing the perception of the company and starting to offer value for both traditional tough customers and new customers a light to show why you should take a look and have a conversation with comp I'd love to get your feedback is combo kind of that legacy company that you've always visions or it's combo you know one part it's not ahead of this competition when it comes to innovation and vision spending around this acquisition of heavy talk to you online at the CTO visor on Twitter the CTO visor calm
