Cloud Native Network Function Virtualization

hey how's it going Steve Townsend from the CTO of Iser comm with another CTO DOS I'm here in Hollywood California to attend the open source event the old NS open networking summit put on by the Linux Foundation a lot of great information so this is typically a conference focused that service providers who are using open source to move the ball forward a lot of opus that but we can't get away obviously from kubernetes and cloud native technologies what's going on that front I think the most
interesting thing is being able to take a application network for focused application says says network function virtualization and moving that to a cloud native platform since tall Intel doing a lot of work in this area and I think that's probably one of the most interesting takeaways from the conference obviously when you're looking at cloud native and containerization you're going to look at kubernetes and I think this is a great use case that enterprises have in general as they look to modernize that application is to run
in a micro services based application the first step in any journey is to first lift and shift the application from either a FET virtual machine packaging and to container packaging and this is where Intel and cistal's started by taking NFV functions and packaging those into containers and this is where they ran into the first set of problems kubernetes just doesn't have constructs that lend themselves to network function virtualization one of the simple ones that we're not going to read through the whole talk one of the
simple ones is just process pinning the ability to take a specific container process and pin it to a hyper-threading on a specific core on an Intel processor or any other multi-core processor this is extremely important when it comes to performance and network function virtualization the Intel Cisco team had to come up with a way and they did this by a plugin with kubernetes to allow operators to pin processes to specific cores so that these NFV functions can take advantage of Xeon specific extensions that allow such
as VP DK that allow for high performance throughput for packet processing so this is the our presentation and the team went on and on about the different challenges presented in kubernetes when it came to creating network functions virtualization inside of a cloud native environment which went to the next level which after you've packaged to applications simply in a container again fully supported is then bringing it down into micro services and then reimagining the service so it's not enough to simply lift and shift your enterprise application
to a cloud native infrastructure you have to take the next step the thing Oracle use the term land and expand or land and improve move and improve is the term I like it I'm going to start adopted and start using it so you need to move the application this needs to start improving the application the improvement is then taking it and breaking into micro services kubernetes where it's at today just isn't there when it comes to support to support network function virtualization but Intel Cisco and
the rest of the open-source community is working towards that just as a use case even if you're not a networking person it is extremely interesting to see the process of taking a traditional mature application rethinking it for micro services executing the steps to move towards that micro-service cloud native based architecture that's it for this CTO dose you want to learn more about the links foundation you can go to the foundation or you want to find more about the CTO advisor you know what this CTO dose
