hi I'm Tina Roosevelt I'm here in Las Vegas during reinvent on the CTO dose I'm here with my colleagues Percival Marino widget and we are gonna talk about how Amazon talk this week about coming into your neighborhood into the I T Davis Center with a whole bunch of services ready guys we're here in Vegas anniversary event and I thought what we could talk about maybe is what was the announcement for each of you that was the most compelling so did you buy your first yeah sure

so I think the most compelling announcement for us was the AWS wavelength announcement along with the AWS local zones from so my name is Marino I'm from the Sdn business unit at VMware and one of the things that I started to realize is that we have to be able to kind of transform but we can't leverage our traditional approaches to being being able to transform and take advantage of what AWS is doing with wavelength and local zones but it creates opportunity for us so before you

go way into that yeah what could you explain the announcements like what were the announcements my soon local zones from from what I saw is a simply an approach to be able to take specific resources that AWS has to offer the ec2 EBS and several other things and then localize them to large cities so that it can reduce latency for your application access and then the second part of that the wavelength announcement is basically providing that low latency access for customers to be able access those

applications whether in local zones or other AZ's so that does create some very interesting conversations that need to be had back and at HQ that is really interesting because I don't we went to edge Congress we read Congress together it sounds very similar to what people were talking about at edge conference as far as like you know you have this one example they had there was a gaming you know everyone live in gaming and yet that happens and so there was a company there that wants

to drop their publish app in certain areas to boost so is that kind of what they're going for that's an addressable use case potentially then there's so many other use cases now when you look to how we do it or how we want to look at it we want to be able to provide the same thing but from a very neutral standpoint yeah however leveraging what EWS has to offer it allows us to scale what we can offer to our customers so things like local zones

ties well into our story around how we leverage some of our software for example in SVO and from VMware we have something called the gateways the gateways act is kind of our last month carrier but they also act as a footprint where we can do additional things and if we can tie them into local zones as well as tie it into what AWS is doing with weight like that creates opportunities for customers to be able Optimates optimize the way they access their applications and also modernize

them as well so me that's this so from a young work standpoint that's very much IT ops building something for and running it because you saw fights on from being able to do this on an infrastructure to forth so the developers that are writing applications can take advantage of it when you look at what Amazon's offering it's definitely the staffs application where no one gets to touch the end go structure so what kind of you know what kind of learning has to go in a place

to think about really architecting a solution that would span both I think it takes a little bit of really deep deeply understanding what AWS has to offer take what they plan on doing in the future and finding ways to basically marry what we do today to be honest when we when we say cloud delivered we are using cloud technologies to be able to deliver our service and if AWS is enhanced what they're offering us why not they get advantage of that so for example the recent

armed announcement that just came out their enhancement with the graviton project and a newer set of instances gives us the ability to also think about how we can start leveraging our ESXi on an arm initiative and then when you take that and then supplement or I should say they're on top sto and it gives us flexibility to where we can throw our services so this is giving us scale this is giving us capabilities that we never had before yes I'm curious about your take on the

horizon integration right which is 5u so a lot of people might not realize when we talk about 5g networks it's a radio network and those radio networks are actually very segmented from IP net and regular you know right internet network traffic and so it looks like we're also starting to see infrastructure providers with better ties to the radio networks mm-hmm do you see this local access as infrastructure as part of that it's possible I mean we're able to take analysis data analytics all of that information

from you know how things connect how applications move around and then map that to like 5g network slicing so that we can better determine which applications should flow on which slice of that network that 5g network so it's a matter of us running on top of what's already available and enhancing the experience overall makes a lot of sense and now we're talking about hyper regional right components for for Amazon for everybody right at the 5 G's gonna have regional rollout so we're gonna see it in

a sort of controlled predictable way you're not gonna you're not gonna show up with every Metro in in the world with 5g simultaneously it's gonna be staged exactly and I believe in order to get there we also have to be able to work to leverage things like cloud native constructs things like kubernetes or equivalents out there and so that's where where we start to look at me and learn what they have done with tansy mission control of project Pacific that's just enabling us to be a

little bit more creative on our end and possibly start creating a larger ecosystem from within the organization itself it just opens up all new avenues Justin any work honestly digital transformation absolute elation so what was your big so it's funny my my take going for this I'm rappers felon we deal with physical layer infrastructure so I usually in helping enterprise customers and customers automate that the bare metal level for us right and the thing that I think it makes Amazon you know very threatening to a

lot of people in the enterprise in bare metal spaces this outposts announcement so last year they they they said they were going to do it this year they released outposts and what they've really been able to do with this is is or at least say they're gonna do so there's no there's a lot of proof coming you know that needs to come out but they're they're saying they're delivering racks of Amazon hardware completely eliminating you know traditional enterprise hardware vendors traditional enterprise delivery traditional systems integrators

out of the loop you buy this rack of gear and it goes into premises data center very similar to the story that you were talking about right it's low latency its physical location matters it's control and data security mmm-hmm you know what we're seeing is a lot of the the key messages we've highlighted are ones where it's not traditional Amazon Elastic huge cloud its Amazon coming into your neighborhood from a cloud perspective as I'm coming in and it's it's a very big threat you know to

the broader market and you know Amazon's building very integrated services they're they're connecting to the major major vendors and major networks and it's going to be fascinating to watch how people respond okay VMware does have a offering without with vSphere it's coming and I think the enemy right and I think that'll be an important component it'll be interesting for me to see how excited Amazon gets as tansu becomes competitive with it and you start being able to say ok instead of having you know the Amazon

versions of kubernetes might be able to get that whole stack from VMware mm-hmm but also that's that there's a whole bunch of vendors who are converged infrastructure aibert no HDI and you know that stack of gear could actually be a disruptor to people like Nutanix in the market and so there's a whole bunch of people that should be watching these series of announcements thinking they were in safe territory because they were on-premises private you know local and all of a sudden Amazon is showing up in

boats what do you think that because should be especially since you know where you work do you think Amazon can deliver hardware that is at the end was at the enterprise level that were used to because we know that that's that last icky sludgy mile is nailing it to the ground and that's why devs I went to the club because they promise them they won't have to deal with this leji gross stuff anymore you know the reality of enterprise data centers is that they are all

a little bit different and they're not different for wrong reasons so I think the thing that that I think about for that is you know people haven't built they're not not stupid building data centers and making decisions that are bad decisions people make this the infrastructure decisions to solve problems and they're usually right decisions they're just hard to you yeah you have to deal with the reality of what that infrastructure is and that's one of the things that's kept these cloud vendors from just showing up

an enterprise Enterprise says well I have to have this thing set up this way this naming convention this IP range this security protocol they have reasons for those things and I do think that it sounds great to say we're going to ship a racket gear you're gonna plug in a cable to cables and it's gonna work if you don't where you're using your head VMware knows this really well in the enterprise the the heterogeneity in the enterprise is there to serve a purpose and it's what

makes enterprises harder and slower and you know and not have all the agility but it's not wrong I think to end of our time but this was a great conversation for another 20 minutes up to its rating those the plugger thank you thank y'all
